Could anyone tell me that TV show Dexter follows the books its based off of or not?

I haven't watch the Dexter on TV but I love the books. Does the show dexter follows the books its based on?
A5: I watching both the Dexter books and Dexter DVD and I can tell you that only the first season is similar to the first book after that the show and the books go their separate ways.
